For centuries, it has stood face-to-face with nearby oases like loyal companions, inspiring endless imagination.
Formed during the Han Dynasty, the desert took shape due to powerful winds from the Qijiaojing and Dabancheng wind gaps of the Tianshan Mountains, carrying massive amounts of sand and depositing them here. This created the unique landscape of a “desert with sand mountains.”

Traditional Uyghur customs are well preserved here, earning it the title of a “living fossil of folk culture.”
Next, visit the Ancient City of Gaochang, a national key cultural heritage site. Viewed from above, the city resembles an irregular square divided into outer, inner, and palace cities. Covering 200 hectares, the outer wall is an impressive 12 meters thick and 11.5 meters high, with a circumference of about 5 kilometers—constructed with rammed earth and still in remarkable condition today.
