If you’re planning a trip through western Sichuan or visiting Jiuzhaigou, chances are Huanglong National Scenic Area is already on your list. But most travelers hesitate for a simple reason: is it really worth the time and effort, especially at high altitude?
Unlike destinations where every step feels equally impressive, Huanglong is more about knowing where to focus. Understanding the layout, the key highlights, and how to pace yourself makes a huge difference between an exhausting hike and a rewarding experience.
Geographic Location and Core Attractions of Huanglong Scenic Area
Huanglong Scenic Area is located in Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China, about 330 kilometers away from Chengdu. The main gully of the scenic reserve, Huanglong Gully, is a travertine ridge that gradually rises from south to north. Its terrain looks like a golden giant dragon lying among snow-capped peaks and glaciers, hence the name “Huanglong”. The altitude of the whole scenic reserve ranges from 3,100 meters to 3,576 meters, belonging to a high-altitude area.
The core attractions of Huanglong include the following parts:
Five-Color Pools
Located at the highest point of the scenic reserve with an altitude of 3,576 meters, it is the largest color pool group in Huanglong. Hundreds of color pools are connected together, and the water color changes with light and angle, ranging from light blue to dark blue and from light yellow to golden yellow, colorful.
Zhengyan Pools
Composed of more than 500 color pools with diverse embankment shapes, it is the place with the most beautiful color pool shapes in the scenic reserve. The pool water is rich in color, competing for splendor.
Golden Sand Spreading Ground
A travertine flow about 1,500 meters long. Water flows slowly down the slope, forming golden ripples on the travertine surface, just like golden sand spreading on the ground.
Welcome Pools
The first color pool group after entering the scenic reserve. The pool water is clear, surrounded by green trees, and it is the first stop for tourists to take photos.
Small attractions such as Xishen Cave and Bonsai Pools also have their own characteristics, connected by plank roads along the way.
The travertine landscape of Huanglong formed tens of thousands of years ago. After spring water rich in calcium carbonate flows out of the ground, carbon dioxide in the water escapes, and calcium carbonate precipitates. Over time, travertine embankments are formed to enclose color pools one by one. This geological process is still continuing, so Huanglong is known as a “living geological museum”.
