1. What is Karola Glacier & Why It’s Worth Visiting
Karola Glacier is located between Nagarzê County (Shannan) and Gyantse County (Shigatse) in Tibet. It is one of Tibet’s three major continental glaciers, covering about 9.4 square kilometers. The glacier tongue sits at around 5,600 meters, while the main viewing area is at approximately 5,020 meters above sea level.
Backed by Mount Noijin Kangsang (7,191 m), the glacier lies incredibly close to the highway—making it one of the most accessible and visually striking glaciers in Tibet.
At first sight, it feels overwhelming—like a massive suit of icy armor draped over the mountainside. It has also served as a filming location for movies such as Red River Valley and Clouds and Water.

After passing the glacier toward Shigatse:
- A long downhill with multiple bends
- Second-to-last curve
- Watch your left mirror
👉 A clean, cinematic road composition that most people miss
📍Spot 2: Semi-Hiking Viewpoint
- Park at the first parking lot
- Walk uphill
- About 20 meters below the top
- Look for prayer flags on the left
👉 Better angle than the main platform, fewer people

Tips:
- Sit sideways on the roof
- One leg relaxed down

For many travelers, this is the second day after arriving in Lhasa:
- Altitude jumps to over 5,000 m
- Body not yet acclimatized
Common issues:
- Heart rate over 130 bpm
- Dropping oxygen levels
- Dizziness, chest tightness
Severe cases can lead to fainting
✔ What You Should Do

- Keep physical activity light
👉 If roadside views are enough, don’t push yourself
6. What to Wear & Bring
Clothing:
- Base layer + fleece + shell jacket
- Gloves and hat (strong wind)
Essentials:
- Sunglasses (strong reflection)
- SPF50+ sunscreen
- Snacks and warm water
For hiking only:

7. Tickets & Parking (Important Tip)
Current situation:
- Officially: Free access (site under upgrade)
- Reality: Parking near service area may require a “ticket” (~50 RMB/person)
Issues:
- No ticket = no access to main parking
- Even restroom use may require payment
✔ Workaround
- Look for limited free parking spots
- Or drive further to find roadside space
👉 Once parked, you can explore and take photos freely
