Arrival in Lhasa
Welcome to Lhasa, the spiritual center of Tibet.
Upon arrival in Lhasa by train or flight, your Tibetan guide will greet you at the airport or railway station with a traditional hada, a white scarf symbolizing blessings and good fortune. After meeting your guide and driver, you will be transferred to downtown Lhasa along the scenic route beside the Lhasa River and the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the largest river flowing through Tibet and known internationally as the Brahmaputra.
After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is reserved for rest and altitude acclimatization. Located at an elevation of 3,650 meters, Lhasa requires time for your body to adjust to the high plateau environment before starting sightseeing. You can relax at the hotel or take a gentle walk nearby while enjoying your first impressions of Tibet.
To help with acclimatization, please drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and strenuous activities, and allow yourself enough time to adapt. If you need any assistance during your stay, our service center at Lhasa Gang-Gyan Hotel is available to provide travel support and arrangements.

Lhasa Monastery Day: Drepung Monastery – Sera Monastery
Today focuses on Tibetan Buddhist culture, with visits to two of Lhasa’s most important monasteries and opportunities to learn about the traditions and daily lives of Tibetan monks.
In the morning, explore Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in Tibet and home to over 10,000 monks during its peak period. Walking through the Coqen Hall, your guide will introduce the history, beliefs, and development of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as the important figures connected with this remarkable monastery.
Continue to Loseling College, one of Drepung Monastery’s major teaching institutions. Here, you can observe the living and learning environment of Tibetan monks, including their dormitories and daily routines, gaining a deeper understanding of monastic life.
In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery, one of the three great Gelug monasteries in Lhasa. From Monday to Saturday between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, you can witness the famous monk debate sessions, where monks discuss Buddhist philosophy through traditional questions, answers, and energetic hand-clapping gestures. Your guide will explain the meaning and background behind this unique cultural experience.
In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your fellow travelers. Your guide will share useful travel information, present traditional Tibetan gifts, and help everyone become familiar with the group before continuing the journey deeper into Tibet.

Lhasa Tour: Potala Palace – Jokhang Temple – Barkhor Street
Today you will discover the cultural and spiritual highlights of Lhasa, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites that represent the heart of Tibetan history and faith.
After breakfast, visit the magnificent Potala Palace, the former winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas and one of Tibet’s most iconic landmarks. As you explore its impressive halls, chapels, and private rooms, you will learn about Tibet’s religious and political history while viewing precious treasures such as gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave associated with Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd king of Tibet.
After visiting the palace, stop at Longwangtan Park located at the foot of Potala Palace. This peaceful park offers a different perspective of the landmark, where you can photograph the palace reflected in the water and observe local residents enjoying their daily activities.
In the afternoon, continue to Jokhang Temple, regarded as the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside the temple, you will see the highly revered 12-year-old Sakyamuni Buddha statue, believed to have been brought to Tibet more than a thousand years ago. Outside the temple, pilgrims from different parts of Tibet gather to pray and perform religious practices.
After exploring Jokhang Temple, walk along Barkhor Street, a sacred pilgrimage route and traditional market area. You can join locals in walking the kora, while browsing shops selling prayer wheels, Tibetan handicrafts, jewelry, and religious items. The day ends with a visit to a traditional Tibetan tea house, where you can enjoy sweet milk tea and learn more about everyday life in Lhasa.

Lhasa – Gyantse- Shigatse: Yamdrok Lake, Korola Glacier
Today’s journey takes you through some of Tibet’s most spectacular landscapes, including the sacred Yamdrok Lake, the impressive Korola Glacier, and traditional Tibetan villages along the plateau.
Leaving Lhasa, you will cross Gampala Pass (4,790m), where you will enjoy your first panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake. One of Tibet’s three holy lakes, Yamdrok is famous for its turquoise waters surrounded by snow-covered mountains. From here, you can also see Mount Nyenchen Khangsar (7,191m), the highest peak near Lhasa.
Continue along the lakeshore with several opportunities to admire the scenery and take photographs. Near the end of the lake, you may have the chance to visit a local farming family and enjoy lunch together, experiencing a glimpse of traditional Tibetan rural life.
The journey continues to Korola Glacier, one of Tibet’s most famous glaciers. From the viewpoint, you can see the glacier’s impressive ice formations extending down the mountainside. You will also stop at Simila Mountain Pass, where colorful prayer flags are traditionally hung to express wishes for peace, health, and blessings.
After passing through Gyantse, with time to view the historic old town and fortress, continue toward Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. The road passes through wide Tibetan barley fields, villages, and grazing lands before arriving at your hotel for a restful evening.

Shigatse – Tingri – EBC (5,000m)
Today’s journey brings you closer to the Himalayas, with multiple viewpoints offering unforgettable views of Mount Everest.
After leaving Shigatse, you will travel toward Tingri and cross Gyatsola Pass (5,280m), where you may catch your first distant view of Mount Everest. Rising above the surrounding peaks, Everest appears like a lotus bud emerging from the mountain range.
Continue into Mount Everest National Nature Reserve and reach Gawula Pass (5,198m), one of the best viewpoints for Himalayan scenery. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of several of the world’s highest peaks, with Mount Everest standing prominently among them.
The road then descends through the winding route toward Everest Base Camp. As you approach the base camp, Everest gradually becomes larger with every turn, revealing its majestic northern face. Upon arrival at EBC, you will stand before the world’s highest peak and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
As evening arrives, watch the sunset illuminate Everest’s north face with golden colors. After night falls, if weather conditions are favorable, you may admire the star-filled sky above the Himalayas before resting for the night.

EBC – Sakya – Shigatse
Before leaving Everest Base Camp, we will visit Rongbuk Monastery, located at an altitude of 5,154 meters and known as the highest monastery in the world. Standing near the northern face of Mount Everest, this sacred monastery offers a unique combination of spiritual atmosphere and incredible mountain scenery.
Afterward, instead of returning by the same route, we will travel back toward Shigatse via Dinggye, experiencing a different side of the Himalayan landscape. At Dinggye Xilin Viewpoint, you will have another opportunity to admire Mount Everest from the eastern side, along with Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth-highest peak, surrounded by vast wetlands and open valleys.
Continuing the journey, we will make a short stop at Sakya Ancient Town. Walking through the historic streets, you can experience the traditional atmosphere and cultural charm of this ancient Tibetan settlement before continuing toward Shigatse.
Upon arrival in Shigatse, enjoy a special evening at a local Langma Hall, where Tibetan songs and dances accompany dinner, creating a memorable celebration after your Everest adventure.

Shigatse – Lhasa – Tashilhunpo Monastery
This morning, we will visit Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug school and the traditional residence of successive Panchen Lamas. Located on the hillside of Shigatse, the monastery features magnificent halls, prayer courtyards, and a peaceful religious atmosphere.
Inside the monastery, you will see the world’s largest gilded statue of Maitreya Buddha, a remarkable work of Tibetan Buddhist art. During your visit, you may also observe monks in their traditional yellow hats and red robes carrying out daily religious activities.
After exploring Tashilhunpo Monastery, we will drive back to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, often regarded as the mother river of the Tibetan people. Along the way, enjoy the changing landscapes of valleys, rivers, mountains, and Tibetan villages.
After returning to Lhasa, the rest of the afternoon will be free for you to explore Barkhor Street at your own pace, shop for local souvenirs, or enjoy your final moments in this historic Tibetan city.

Departure from Lhasa
Your Tibet journey comes to an end today. After breakfast, please confirm your departure schedule with your guide in advance, and your driver will arrange a timely transfer to Lhasa Airport or Railway Station.

Lhasa to Everest Base Camp Trip FAQs
How far ahead should I book this tour?
Aim to book at least 15 to 20 days before you depart. Booking a month or two out gives us more room to secure your travel documents and accommodation in advance, and often qualifies you for early bird pricing, so the earlier the better.
What travel documents do I need for Everest Base Camp?
You’ll need a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region. A few additional local permits, such as the Alien’s Travel Permit needed for areas outside Lhasa, are arranged once you’re already in Tibet. We handle the Tibet Travel Permit and other local paperwork as part of your tour package, so there’s nothing you need to chase down yourself.
How do I apply for the Tibet Travel Permit, and how long does it take?
Once you’ve booked, send us scanned copies of your Chinese visa and a passport valid for at least six more months. If you’re on a work visa, we’ll also need proof of employment in China; on a student visa, proof of enrollment. Processing typically takes 7 to 14 working days, and we’ll mail the permit to your address in China 3 to 5 days before departure so it’s in hand in time for your flight or train to Lhasa.
How high is Everest Base Camp, and what about altitude sickness?
Base Camp sits at 5,200 meters, the highest point of the trip. Mild symptoms like headaches or dizziness aren’t unusual for first-timers at this altitude, but there’s no need to be alarmed. This 8-day itinerary is built for gradual acclimatization: you’ll spend two to three days around Lhasa at 3,650 meters before moving up to Shigatse at roughly 3,800 meters and finally Base Camp itself. Most travelers adjust well, and serious altitude reactions are uncommon on this route. If you do develop a severe headache or trouble breathing at Base Camp, use oxygen right away, tell your guide immediately, and get medical attention as soon as possible; if needed, your guide can arrange transfer to a lower elevation such as Zhaxizong Township or Tingri County.
When’s the best time to visit Everest Base Camp?
Spring, from April to early June, and autumn, from September to October, bring the clearest skies, mildest weather, and the best odds of an unobstructed view of the summit. Winter is also worth considering: skies are often crisp and clear, the stargazing is excellent, and off-season pricing makes it the most affordable time to go. Summer, July and August, is Tibet’s rainy season; most rain falls overnight rather than during the day, but clouds and fog can occasionally obscure the mountain.
