Day-by-Day Itinerary with Altitude Details

Day 1: Arrival in Lhasa (3,650m)

Arrive in Lhasa and transfer to your hotel. This day is reserved for rest and acclimatization. Avoid strenuous activity and focus on hydration.

Day 2: Lhasa City Tour (3,650m)

Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street. This is a light activity day designed to help your body adjust while exploring Tibetan culture.

Day 3: Lhasa – Yamdrok Lake – Karola Glacier – Shigatse (~3,800m)

Drive over high mountain passes to Yamdrok Lake (4,400m), one of Tibet’s most beautiful lakes. Continue to Karola Glacier (5,000m) before reaching Shigatse.

Altitude gain is gradual but noticeable, so move slowly and stay hydrated.

Day 4: Shigatse – Tingri – Everest Base Camp – Basong Village (~4,300–5,200m)

Travel towards Everest Base Camp (EBC, ~5,200m), with stunning Himalayan views along the way. After visiting EBC, descend slightly to Basong Village for overnight.

This is one of the first major high-altitude exposure days.

Day 5: Basong – Tingri – Mt. Shishapangma – Peikutso Lake – Saga (~4,600m)

Drive through remote landscapes with views of Mount Shishapangma (8,027m). Stop at Peikutso Lake before reaching Saga.

The terrain becomes more isolated, marking entry into western Tibet.

Day 6: Saga – Zhongba – Maquan River Wetland – Darchen (~4,670m)

A long driving day across vast plains and wetlands. Arrive in Darchen, the starting point of the Mount Kailash trek.

Rest well and prepare for the upcoming kora (pilgrimage trek).

Mount Kailash Kora (Trekking Section)

Day 7: Darchen – Drirapuk Monastery (~5,080m)

Distance: ~20 km (6 km by eco-bus + 14 km trekking)

The trek begins gradually but gains elevation. Drirapuk offers the best north face view of Mount Kailash.

Day 8: Drirapuk – Dzultripuk Monastery (~4,790m)

Distance: ~20 km trekking
Highest point: Dolma La Pass (~5,630m)

This is the most difficult day, crossing Dolma La Pass, the highest point of the entire journey. Expect steep climbs and rapid altitude changes.

Day 9: Dzultripuk – Darchen – Zanda (~3,800–4,000m)

Distance: ~11 km (7 km trekking + 4 km by vehicle)

Complete the kora and drive to Zanda. The lower altitude provides some relief after the trek.

Western Tibet Exploration

Day 10: Zanda – Earth Forest – Guge Kingdom – Darchen (~4,500m)

Visit the Zanda Earth Forest and the ruins of the ancient Guge Kingdom, one of the most fascinating historical sites in Tibet.

Return to Darchen for overnight.

Day 11: Darchen – Mount Kailash – Lake Manasarovar – Saga (~4,600m)

Explore Lake Manasarovar (4,590m), one of the most sacred lakes in Asia, with Mount Kailash in the background.

Drive back to Saga.

Return Journey via Northern Tibet

Day 12: Saga – Peikutso Lake – Shigatse (~3,800m)

Retrace part of the route with another stop at Peikutso Lake before returning to Shigatse.

Altitude decreases slightly, making travel more comfortable.

Day 13: Shigatse – Jiegangri – Serling Tso – Baingoin (~4,500m)

Head into northern Tibet, visiting sacred mountains and the expansive Serling Tso Lake.

This area is remote and less visited.

Day 14: Baingoin – Namtso Lake – Lhasa (~3,650m)

Visit Namtso Lake (4,718m), one of Tibet’s most famous high-altitude lakes, and cross Nagenla Pass before returning to Lhasa.

Day 15: Lhasa Departure

Transfer to the airport or train station. End of the journey.

Altitude and Acclimatization Tips

  • Spend at least 2 days acclimatizing in Lhasa before heading west
