Yuzixi Travel Guide : A 360° Snow Mountain Viewpoint Overlooking Gongga and Yala Snow Mountains

If there is one destination that has become a must-visit attraction in Western Sichuan in recent years, it is undoubtedly Yuzixi.

Unlike traditional tourist attractions with ticket gates and commercial facilities, Yuzixi is essentially a high-altitude observation platform surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in China. Thanks to its unrivaled panoramic views, it has become a favorite destination for photographers, road-trippers, and travelers chasing the perfect sunset.

Situated at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level, Yuzixi is widely regarded as one of the best places in Western Sichuan to witness the famous “Golden Mountain” phenomenon, where the setting sun paints snow-covered peaks in shades of gold, orange, and crimson. On clear days, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Gongga Snow Mountain, Yala Snow Mountain, Siguniang Mountain, and the surrounding ranges, all from a single location.

Many travelers journey hundreds of kilometers just to experience the magical twenty minutes when sunlight transforms the snowy peaks into glowing masterpieces.

Where Is Yuzixi?

Yuzixi is located near Yuzixi Village in Xinduqiao Town, Kangding City, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.

It lies close to the famous G318 National Highway and has become one of the most popular viewpoints along Western Sichuan road-trip routes.

Location: Yuzixi Village, Kangding, Garzê Prefecture, Sichuan Province

Elevation: Approximately 4,179–4,200 meters

Entrance Fee: No official admission ticket

Environmental Maintenance Fee: Around RMB 20–30 per person

Shuttle Bus Fee: Approximately RMB 60 per person (subject to change)

Opening Hours: Open year-round

Due to recent tourism management measures, visitors are generally required to park at designated parking areas and take a shuttle bus to the main viewing platform.

Why Is Yuzixi So Popular?

The greatest appeal of Yuzixi is that it is not a viewpoint for a single mountain.

Instead, it offers one of the most complete panoramic snow mountain skylines in Western Sichuan.

On clear days, visitors can simultaneously admire:

  • Gongga Snow Mountain
  • Yala Snow Mountain
  • Siguniang Mountain ranges
  • Zheduo Mountain ranges
  • Tagong Grasslands

The unique positioning of Gongga and Yala Snow Mountains on opposite sides of the horizon creates a dramatic landscape rarely found elsewhere in Western Sichuan.

Best Time to Visit Yuzixi

Yuzixi is beautiful throughout the year, but each season offers a different experience.

Spring (April to June)

Snow remains abundant on the peaks while alpine grasslands gradually turn green.

Weather conditions are relatively stable, making this a great season for landscape photography.

Summer (July to August)

The grasslands become lush and vibrant.

Cloud seas frequently appear after rainfall.

However, summer is also the rainy season, reducing the chances of seeing the Golden Mountain effect.

Checking weather forecasts in advance is highly recommended.

Autumn (September to November)

Widely considered the best season to visit Yuzixi.

The skies are exceptionally clear, visibility is excellent, and the probability of witnessing sunset alpenglow on the snow mountains is at its highest.

This is the favorite season for photographers.

Winter (December to February)

The snow-covered scenery reaches its most dramatic state.

Cold temperatures bring crystal-clear skies and excellent stargazing conditions.

Nighttime temperatures can drop below -10°C, so proper winter clothing is essential.

Sunset Golden Mountain Viewing Guide

Most visitors come to Yuzixi specifically to witness the famous Golden Mountain phenomenon.

One important rule:

Never arrive at the last minute.

It is highly recommended to arrive at least one to two hours before sunset.

Suggested schedule:

  • Reach the mountain before 4:00 PM
  • Begin scouting photography locations around 5:00 PM
  • Expect the best light approximately 30 minutes before sunset

During autumn and winter, the golden glow often appears around 6:00 PM.

During summer, sunset may occur closer to 8:00 PM.

The exact timing depends on weather conditions and seasonal sunset times.

The transformation typically lasts between 15 and 30 minutes as sunlight gradually spreads from the mountain summits downward.

Many travelers consider it one of the most rewarding natural spectacles in Western China.

Transportation Guide

From Chengdu

Route:

Chengdu → Ya’an → Kangding → Xinduqiao → Yuzixi

Distance: Approximately 380 km

Driving Time: Around 6–7 hours

For a more comfortable trip, many travelers spend a night in Xinduqiao before visiting Yuzixi for sunset.

From Xinduqiao

Xinduqiao is the most convenient base for visiting Yuzixi.

Driving time is approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour.

For navigation, avoid searching simply for “Yuzixi.”

Instead, use:

Yuzixi Starry Sky Camp

This route is generally more accurate and follows the better road conditions currently available.

Road Conditions and Self-Driving Tips

The most recommended route is:

Xinduqiao → Yuzixi Second Village → Yuzixi Starry Sky Camp

Advantages include:

  • Mostly paved roads
  • Relatively stable road conditions
  • Suitable for standard passenger vehicles

The final section consists of gravel roads.

Low-clearance vehicles should drive cautiously and reduce speed.

Routes through Gedilam or via Tagong on Highway 248 are generally not recommended due to rough road conditions and a higher risk of tire damage.

Stargazing at Yuzixi

Besides sunset views, Yuzixi is also one of the best stargazing locations in Western Sichuan.

The high elevation, clean air, and minimal light pollution make it possible to see:

  • The Milky Way
  • Countless stars
  • Major constellations

Photography recommendations:

  • Bring a tripod
  • Use a wide-angle lens
  • Shoot with long exposure settings

The results can be spectacular.

Altitude Sickness Precautions

At over 4,200 meters above sea level, altitude sickness is common.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty sleeping

Recommended essentials:

✅ Portable oxygen canisters

✅ Glucose drinks

✅ Warm beverages

✅ Cold-weather clothing

Once at the summit:

  • Walk slowly
  • Avoid running or jumping
  • Avoid alcohol consumption

Taking it easy greatly reduces the risk of severe symptoms.

What to Wear

The most important thing to know about Yuzixi is that it is extremely windy.

Even in summer, temperatures can feel surprisingly cold.

Spring and Autumn

  • Windproof jacket
  • Fleece layer
  • Long pants
  • Hiking shoes

Winter

  • Down jacket
  • Insulated shell jacket
  • Warm hat
  • Scarf
  • Gloves

While you may remove outer layers briefly for photos, proper cold-weather protection is essential during long periods of waiting for sunset.

Where to Stay

Xinduqiao

The most recommended option.

It offers the widest range of hotels, restaurants, and travel services while remaining only about an hour from Yuzixi.

Yuzixi Second Village Homestays

Closer to the viewpoint and convenient for sunrise or sunset photography.

Some accommodations even offer mountain views directly from the property.

Summit Tents

Although popular among some stargazers, the high altitude, strong winds, and cold temperatures make overnight stays challenging.

Unless you have prior high-altitude camping experience, staying in Xinduqiao is generally the better choice.

Photography Tips

Golden Mountain Photography

Arrive early and secure a good location.

A telephoto lens works best for capturing details of the illuminated peaks.

Portrait Photography

Bright-colored clothing such as:

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • White

creates strong contrast against the mountains and sky, making photos stand out.

Night Sky Photography

Do not rush down the mountain immediately after sunset.

Staying a little longer often rewards visitors with incredible views of the Milky Way and star-filled skies.
